Olivier is likely to stand up

- BY JOHN HEALY

Olivier Vernon was the only Giant to kneel for the national anthem from Week 4 on last season, but the Big Blue pass rusher likely won’t be pushing back against the new NFL policy this year.

“I ain’t trying to get fined, so nah,” Vernon said at the Landon Collins Celebrity Softball game in Pomona, N.Y., on Saturday.

The new anthem policy requires players to stand and “show respect for the flag and Anthem” but also gives players the choice to stay in the locker room.

Vernon voiced his displeasure with the new policy.

“I mean you never want to be told what to do,” he said. “Especially when it comes to your freedom of speech. But it is what it is.”

Giants head coach Pat Shurmur said he expects his team to “do the right thing” and Vernon was unsure whether he would choose to remain in the locker room.

“I have no idea, man,” he said. “Rules are the rules. I ain’t got nothing to say, really.”

The linebacker, who is a son of a police officer, had been outspoken against President Trump before, saying he was “not my president” after a Week 3 game against the Eagles when protests reignited throughout the league. Collins and Damon (Snacks) Harrison also knelt Week 3 but not after.

Vernon did not say much about Trump’s recent remarks that he would like to meet with NFL players and would consider pardoning anyone they felt were treated unfairly by police.

“It is what it is,” he said. “I can’t get too much into detail right now.”
