Spade’s pa is dead of ‘heartbreak’

- By RACHEL DESANTIS

Earl Brosnahan Jr., father of the late designer Kate Spade, died at his home Wednesday night, just weeks after the death of his daughter. He was 89.

Brosnahan’s family attributed his death to failing health in a statement, adding that he was “heartbroken” over the death of his “beloved” daughter.

Spade, 55, committed suicide June 5 in her Upper East Side apartment.

News of Brosnahan’s death was announced as Spade was laid to rest in her native Kansas City, Mo.

Brosnahan, who went by Frank and was also from Kansas City, served a stint in the Navy before taking over his family’s construction business. He and first wife, June, married in 1953 and had six children, including Kate.

He is survived by his wife, Sandy, whom he wed in 1992, three brothers, one sister, five children and eight grandchildren.

Shortly after Spade’s death, Brosnahan told reporters he felt an obligation to speak out on the struggles that took his daughter’s life.

“One thing we feel is that any talk that they do that helps somebody else, Katy would have liked that,” he told the Kansas City Star. “She was always giving and charitable. If that helped anybody avoid anything — fine, she’d be delighted…The last I talked with her, the night before (she died), she was happy, planning a trip to California to look at colleges. She doted on her daughter.”

The famed designer’s namesake brand announced Wednesday it will donate $1 million to support suicide prevention and mental health awareness causes.
