Vic’s kin: Release names of cops plus video

- BY JILLIAN JORGENSEN

Advocates and Saheed Vassell’s family members for the second time this week demanded the city release the names and conduct records of the police officers who killed him, this time bringing petitions signed by 20,000 people.

Vassell, who was bipolar, was shot by police just moments after they arrived following calls about the man waving around a metal object that some witnesses thought could have been a gun but turned out to be a pipe.

“We haven’t heard the name of those officers, we haven’t seen any more video that was promised to us by the mayor,” his father, Eric Vassell, said. “Now the mayor is saying that the video that is released is all that they have.”

His father insisted the video that has been released of the April 4 incident does not show Vassell pointing the object at police. Several clips do show him pointing it at a passerby. Video of his interactions with cops is taken from further away.

“We cannot have officers with bad conduct in our neighborhood, because another life can be taken,” Vassell said. “You are acting as if we are stupid. We are not. We just want the name of those officers so we the Vassell family and the community can be at peace.”

The NYPD has said it cannot release the names of those involved in the shooting because of the safety of the officers.

“As we have said previously, the NYPD released all probative video in the case and did so immediately after the incident,” Sgt. Jessica McRorie said in a statement.
