METS GAMEDAY

- BY KRISTIE ACKERT

DENVER — In the launching pad that is Coors Field, the Mets were grounded by Nolan Arenado and the Rockies.

After hitting into five double plays, tying a franchise high, the Mets fell, 6-4, to Arenado and the Rockies. The Mets lost their third straight and 15th of their last 19 games. They finished the 10-game road trip 3-7 and return to Citi Field Friday 10 games below .500.

Steven Matz gave up a three-run home run to Arenado in the first inning and a two-run double to the Rockies third baseman in the second.

“I threw a couple bad pitches and Arenado beat me twice,” Matz said. “That really sums up the whole game.”

The damage was done, but Matz managed to hold off the Rockies through the next 32⁄3 innings.

He allowed five runs on eight hits, walked two and struck out six in 52⁄3 innings. But the Mets offense could not get to Rockies starter Kyle Freeland, who kept the ball low in the strike zone and coaxed ground balls out of them.

In the field, Arenado also started three of the five double plays that cost the Mets. After taking a 1-0 lead in the first on Todd Frazier’s home run, the Mets gave up three runs in the bottom half and two more next inning. The Mets brought the tying run to the plate in the eighth and ninth innings.
