RAYS (37-40)

-

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — All it took was one pitch for Chasen Shreve to become the goat. Bust out the brooms.

The struggling lefty surrendered a first-pitch, walk-off homer to Jake Bauers leading off the 12th inning, as the Yankees were swept by the Rays 7-6 Sunday afternoon at Tropicana Field. The bullpen had thrown eight no-hit innings in relief of an awful Domingo German before Shreve (5.19 ERA) served it up. It’s the Bombers’ first three-game losing streak of the season.

Gary Sanchez was forced to exit the game in the 10th after coming up lame while trying to beat out a 6-4-3 double play at first. Sanchez, who has already twice dealt with groin issues this season, was replaced by Austin Romine behind the plate. Romine grounded out to third with runners on the corners in the 12th. Manager Aaron Boone said Sanchez will probably head to the disabled list pending an MRI, as the team will call up catcher Kyle Higashioka.

Giancarlo Stanton tied the game with a leadoff homer against ex-Yankee lefty Vidal Nuno in the eighth — his 19th of the year.

It simply wasn’t Domingo’s day before the Yankees’ bullpen helped the team to come back from a 6-3 deficit. In his worst MLB start, German was charged with six runs on nine hits in three-plus innings. He gave up more extra-base hits (six) than he got swings and misses (five). German, whose pitches all seemed to be showing up in the middle of the plate, allowed two runs in the first inning — giving him an 11.25 ERA in the opening frame this season.

In an odd play, pinch-hitter Clint Frazier hit a fly ball leading off the ninth that ricocheted off a speaker on the B ring catwalk — which is in play — before Adeiny Hechavarria caught it.
