NY to cable giant: You’re lying
New York State is dishing on one of its biggest cable companies.
The Public Service Department is accusing Spectrum of “false advertising and misleading of New York consumers.”
Those blunt claims came in the form of a letter Tuesday to Thomas Rutledge, the CEO of the cable provider’s parent company, Charter.
In it, government officials said the communications giant wasn’t speaking clearly.
“Not only has the company failed to meet its obligations to build out its cable system as required, it is now making patently false and misleading claims to consumers that it has met those obligations without in any way acknowledging the findings of the Public Service Commission to the contrary,” according to a statement from Public Service Department CEO John Rhodes.
The statement adds that cable companies are responsible for more than simply providing entertainment to consumers.
“Access to broadband is essential for economic development and social equity. Charter/Spectrum’s intentional deception of New Yorkers must end now,” said Rhodes.
This isn’t the first time that Spectrum has had a tussle with the state. The New York attorney general’s office has charged that the cable company has not been truthful about the internet speed it provides. The state’s Appellate Court ruled last week to allow that case to move forward.
The letter sent to Spectrum asks that the cable giant disclose to consumers that it has not met its obligations and has been untruthful in stating otherwise.
Charter rebutted the state’s allegations.
