Drug ‘traffic’ fear for El Chapo

- Andrew Keshner

Accused drug kingpin El Chapo’s lawyers want to move his federal trial out of Brooklyn to avoid traffic woes, which they say could turn potential jurors against him if they get caught in jams.

On Tuesday, attorneys for Joaquin (El Chapo) Guzman tried to get the blockbuster September drug-trafficking trial transferred to Manhattan, where El Chapo is incarcerated. The judge said he’d give it some thought.

Also Tuesday, Guzman’s lawyers kept up the pressure to obtain evidence they think may gut the claim he led the murderous Sinaloa Cartel, hinting at the possible defense strategy in the upcoming trial.

Judge Brian Cogan told one of Guzman’s lawyers to file papers only the judge can see. Then he’ll decide how much more information he’ll make prosecutors divulge on what people have said about Guzman’s leadership role, or lack thereof.

Currently, authorities close the Brooklyn Bridge to transport Guzman to the downtown Brooklyn federal courthouse.
