METS GAMEDAY

- BY DANIEL POPPER

The Mets sent Sandy Alderson out with a win.

Hours after the general manager announced he was taking a leave of absence due to a recurrence of his cancer, the Mets ended a seven-game losing streak with a 4-3 walk-off victory over the Pirates in 10 innings at Citi Field Tuesday night.

With runners on first and second and one out, Wilmer Flores delivered the winning single down the third-base line to end the game and give the Mets their first win since June 18.

Steven Matz started for the Mets and carried a no-hitter into the fifth. But then things unraveled. The lefthander allowed four straight hits to begin the inning. The Pirates brought two runs home and tied the game. Matz then gave up a solo home run to Gregory Polanco in the seventh, as the Pirates jumped ahead. The lefty struck out seven while walking none and surrendered six hits.

Michael Conforto tied the game in the bottom half, though, depositing a long fly ball into the bullpen in rightcenter field for his 10th home run of the season.
