Sevy set for Sunday

PHILADELPHIA — Luis Severino has said he isn’t scared of any team, and he’ll get another shot against the Red Sox on ESPN’s Sunday Night Baseball.

“I think that’s fair to say that we want him to go against Boston,” Aaron Boone said of Severino, who will be making that start on regular rest. “I’m not sure thought that he wouldn’t go on normal rest if it was somebody else, just how we’re lining up right now. But Boston played a role in that, sure.”

Severino, who is 12-2 with a 2.10 ERA and threw 103 pitches on Tuesday, has made two previous starts against Boston this season. On April 10 at Fenway Park, he gave up five runs on eight hits in five innings. On May 8 at Yankee Stadium, he gave up two runs in six innings and struck out a season-high tying 11.

Following his gem in Philly on Tuesday, Severino made it clear he was eager to face the Red Sox again.

“I want to face any team,” Severino said Tuesday. “I’m not scared of anybody.”

CC Sabathia will pitch on Friday, while Sonny Gray will pitch on Saturday. The Red Sox will counter with three lefties in Eduardo Rodriguez, Chris Sale and David Price.

Boone said “it’s possible” that the Yankees could elect to call-up righty Tyler Austin to face the southpaws, but the team is still trying to figure out its roster for the three-game series.

Another option could be Brandon Drury, who started at first base and homered for Triple-A Scranton on Wednesday night. Granted, Boone downplayed that idea on Tuesday.

Drury was also named to the Triple-A International League All-Star team, though he’s made it clear he wants to be back in the majors.

Greg Bird and Neil Walker have struggled mightily against left-handed pitching this season. Walker went hitless on the road trip overall, while Bird recorded just one hit. Walker hit three balls hard the past two games combined with no results.

Luis Cessa was optioned to Triple-A Scranton after starting Wednesday’s game and taking the loss.

GARDY STAYS IN

Brett Gardner collided hard with the left field wall while making a great catch in the third inning.

The Yankees did not feel the need to send a trainer out to visit him afterward, however.

Jacoby Ellsbury (2017) and Clint Frazier (spring training) both suffered concussions after colliding with walls, neither coming out immediately after being checked on.

“We checked on him. We felt comfortable that he was ok,” Boone said of Gardner. “He’s as tough as they come, but we feel good that he’s fine.”
