Immigrants' library exhibit
In the four years since Emil Allakhverdov moved to the U.S., the New York Public Library has been his constant companion.
Within a few months of arriving from Ukraine in 2014, he found free English classesin the Riverside branch on the Upper West Side.
By 2017, after a stint as a volunteer at another branch, Allakhverdov, 31, had found a job as an information assistant at the Hudson Park branch in the West Village.
This year, as part of Immigrant Heritage Month, the library is hosting an exhibition that Allakhverdov helped create: “New Home: Stories of Immigration.” It documents the lives of immigrants who — like him — take free NYPL English classes .
Through the photographs of the students taken by Manuel Hernandez, another library classmate , “New Home” captures recent immigrants’ experiences .
The exhibit runs through Saturday at the Hudson Park branch library at 66 Leroy St. in lower Manhattan.
