Call it the Baked Apple
New Yorkers can expect a summer scorcher over the weekend, with temps predicted to hit 98 degrees
Temperatures in the city soared to a sizzling 96 degrees Saturday — and it’s only going to get worse.
Sunday promises to be another early-summer scorcher, with a predicted high of 98 as New Yorkers are feeling the effects of the so-called the “heat dome” that’s been baking large portions of the central and eastern U.S.
Combined with the humidity it will feel like more than 100 degrees in the city, the National Weather Service said.
On Saturday, the merciless heat persuaded some city dwellers to try to cool off in the shade as temperatures hovered in the mid-90s most of the day.
“If you come out to the park, you sit in the shade, the time passes a lot easier,” said Hell’s Kitchen resident Sam Weinstein as he lounged in Central Park.
Guests at a gender-reveal party in Prospect Park, Brooklyn, sought refuge under a thicket of trees with ice-cold drinks in tow.
“Honestly, we’re just making the best of it that we can,” said Tracey Brown, 26.
Some New Yorkers made a beeline for the water as soon as the heat began to rise.
“It’s definitely helping,” said Kareen Matadeen, 39, sitting by Prospect Park Lake. “It’s a cheap getaway. There’s nobody around in our view, it’s really nice.”
Others were brave enough to battle the rays head on, crediting their hot weather heritage with helping them cope with the unbearable heat.
“I’m from the Caribbean so this is nice weather for me,” said Corey Fonsette, 38, as he watched his 8-year-old daughter, Soraya, splash through a Prospect Park fountain.
The hot and sticky weather is expected to continue through the July 4 holiday and to the end of the week, according to the National Weather Service.
