SPIKE LEE’S PARKGATE

- BY MEGAN CERULLO

Spike Lee’s film crew did the wrong thing at a Brooklyn park.

Members of the “Do the Right Thing” director’s company mistakenly left the gates unlocked at BAM Park in Fort Greene when they were done filming there on June 11 — allowing area residents to enter the long-shuttered community space for about a week, Brownstoner reported.

Lee was filming scenes for his Netflix series “She’s Gotta Have It” based on his 1986 film, a Housing Preservation and Development Department spokeswoman told Brownstoner.

Lee’s crew had permission to film in the green space, city records show. Crew members had been given a key to the park but forgot to lock its gates when they wrapped for the day.

The 14,000-square-foot park, near the Brooklyn Academy of Music, is bordered by Fulton St., Lafayette Ave. and St. Felix St. and has been closed for more than a decade because of its unstable and contaminated ground.

A 2012 study found that its soil contained high levels of arsenic, mercury, lead and pesticides. It was padlocked in 2005 while officials made plans to revamp and eventually reopen the public space.

The Housing Preservation and Development Department spokeswoman said the agency planned to reopen the park later this year.
