YANKS GAMEDAY

Memo to Brian Cashman: Get help!

Sonny Gray was awful again on Saturday night — and the ticked-off fans in the Bronx let him have it as he was being KO’d by the Red Sox.

Looking like the second coming of Ed Whitson, Gray allowed six runs on seven hits in 21⁄3 innings and was booed frequently as the Yankees got crushed by the Red Sox.

Aaron Boone was cheered when he came out to remove Gray, who was booed off the mound. He struck out none, his inability to put hitters away costing him in yet another start.

Gray (5-6, 5.44 ERA), who has been mostly terrible since coming to New York at last season’s deadline, retired the first two men he faced, but things quickly unraveled from there.

The Red Sox loaded the bases and Rafael Devers hit a 1-2 curveball from Gray just over the wall in left to give Boston a 4-0 lead.

Gray allowed six runs on seven hits in three innings at Fenway Park on April 12. For his career, he has a 6.98 ERA against Boston. As a Yankee, it’s 9.35 in four starts.

The Yankees’ seven-game winning streak against lefty starters was snapped, as Chris Sale dominated. Sale gave up just one hit in seven shutout innings. He struck out 11 and walked one. He also retired the final 16 men he faced.
