HELL-TER SWELTER
City heat wave makes it feel like 100 degrees
City fountains, like this one in Washington Square Park, and beaches were the place to be Sunday as heat wave pushed temperatures to near-record levels. Scorching temps are expected for most of the week.
New York sizzled like early July 4 fireworks Sunday, with temperatures in the high 90s and humidity that made it feel like it was more than 100 degrees.
Central Park’s temperature topped out at 96 degrees in the middle of the day. The peak temperature at both Kennedy and LaGuardia airports was 94 degrees, and the peak at Newark Airport was 98.
The heat didn’t match the record of 100 degrees set in Central Park on July 1, 1901 — but it sure felt like it. The National Weather Service’s heat index said that factoring in humidity, New Yorkers might rightly think the temperature topped 105 degrees.
Con Ed and PSEG Long Island reported scattered power outages.
The most serious was in Fordham, the Bronx, where about 1,000 Con Ed customers lost power, said company spokesman Michael Cleners denin. Most of those customhad their power restored early in the afternoon.
Forecasters expected Sunday to be the hottest day of a heat wave expected to last to the end of the week. Temperatures will drop a bit Monday with a high of 93 degrees, the weather service predicts.
