Strangers on the train

- Dan Rivoli

Mayor de Blasio has taken his hands-off approach to the MTA to a new level — and he’s apparently not mouthing off, either.

Hizzoner has not yet talked to NYC Transit President Andy Byford, the chief of the subway and bus system, who started in January, according to Byford. The transit boss told The New Yorker he had not heard from the mayor.

“Bit weird,” the Byford told the magazine. “I should ring him up.”

De Blasio spokesman Eric Phillips said the mayor will meet with Byford on July 10. But he said that doesn’t mean Byford has been bypassed until now.

“Senior city officials talk to him a good bit,” Phillips tweeted.
