Bakery bag held Central Park bomb

- BY THOMAS TRACY

The 2016 explosion that rocked Central Park and seriously injured a young man was caused by a device inside a bag that came from a New York City area bakery, officials said Tuesday.

The highly explosive chemicals left in the park — just waiting for someone to step on it — was packed in a clear shopping bag with the logo of La Unica Bakery, according to a new flyer that was distributed in Central Park by the NYPD Tuesday on the second anniversary of the explosion.

The bag was used to hold the bakery's “tropical crackers,” according to the flyer.

New York police and the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives are asking anyone with information about the bag or the explosives packed inside to contact them immediately.

Connor Golden (photo) was with two friends looking for the best place to hang a tightrope on July 3, 2016, when he climbed off a large rock near the southeast entrance to Central Park and stepped on the bag.

That provided more than enough force to initiate the blast, which set off a loud boom and severed the then-18-year-old University of Miami student's foot.

No other explosives were found in the park.

Currently, there are no La Unica bakeries in New York City. There are two bakeries by that name in New Jersey.

A $40,000 reward is being offered for any information about the bomber.

As investigators marked the second anniversary of the explosion, Golden's mother is demanding that the attack be thoroughly investigated.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to call NYPD Crime Stoppers at (800) 577-TIPS and the ATF at (888) ATFTIPS.
