METS GAMEDAY

-

TORONTO — At this point, Zack Wheeler’s best hope for a win may be if he does get traded. For the secondstraight start, the right-hander left with a multi-run lead and yet could not get a win. The bullpen wasted a five-run lead as the Mets fell to the Blue Jays, 8-6, at the Rogers Centre Tuesday night.

Lourdes Gurriel, Jr. homered off Tim Peterson in the bottom of the eighth to give the Mets’ bullpen its major-league leading 22nd loss of the season.

The Mets (33-49) have lost three of their last four and nine of their last 11 games. They are 6-23 in their last 29 and have not won in 13 straight series.

Wheeler has not recorded a win since April 29 and Tuesday was his eighth no-decision of the season.

In the seventh, Anthony Swarzak gave up an RBI double and allowed a run to score on a wild pitch. He walked Teoscar Hernandez to put runners on the corners and bring up Yangervis Solarte, the tying run, with two outs for Robert Gsellman.

After a seven-pitch battle with Gsellman, Solarte homered to tie the game.

That spoiled another solid start for Wheeler, who is among the players rumored to be drawing some interest from teams as the trade deadline approaches.

Wheeler allowed two runs on three hits over 6.1 innings. He walked three and struck out five.
