Longtime Newser Marchini dies

- BY NANCY DILLON

Longtime Daily News employee Juliano Marchini, who started as a messenger and later joined the advertising department, died Monday while battling pneumonia. He was 69. Marchini passed away at New York Presbyterian Hospital after undergoing a stem cell transplant in 2016 to treat leukemia, his wife Linda Marchini said.

“It was initially successful, but then his immune system just gave out,” she said.

She said Marchini, a resident of Coram, L.I., started working at The News in the mid-1960s shortly before he was drafted to serve in the Vietnam War.

When he got back, he returned to his old job and worked his way up the ranks for 49 years, she said. He was named Advertising Support Person of the Year in 2014, shortly before he took a buyout and left the newspaper.

“He was a very fun-loving guy. He loved to go to Disney World with his family. We’ve been (there) like 55 or 60 times,” Linda Marchini said Wednesday.

“If any of the kids called him outside to play something on the street, he’d go out and play,” she said.

Marchini is survived by his wife, two daughters, Michele Budke and Victoria McGlinchey, and five grandchildren, Christopher, Nicholas, Kylie, Ashley and Cole.

Visitation at O.B. Davis Funeral Homes in Port Jefferson Station, L.I., was set for Thursday afternoon and evening. A prayer service was set for Friday at 10 a.m.

He will be laid to rest at Calverton National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requested donations to the American Cancer Society.
