YANKSGAMEDAY

- BY MIKE MAZZEO

TORONTO — It’s like the Twitter hashtag says: #DFAGray — or, at the very least, find him a new place to pitch. Because it’s not working out here.

Usually, Sonny Gray gets blasted at home. This time, he allowed five runs on six hits in two innings as the Yankees fell to the Blue Jays, 6-2, on the road Friday night. His ERA is now 5.85. Crisis management time. Exactly a month ago, Gray threw eight shutout innings in this same ballpark. But after getting crushed by the Red Sox (21⁄3 IP, 7 H, 6 R) in his previous start, the Bombers should’ve skipped him.

The big blow came when Gray hung a 0-1 breaking ball that Justin Smoak blasted 404 feet for a three-run homer. It gave the Blue Jays a 5-0 lead with two outs in the second. In all, Gray allowed nine base runners in a 62-pitch implosion.

Devon Travis and Curtis Granderson had previously delivered back-to-back, one-out RBI singles in what was a five-run second.

All eyes will be on J.A. Happ’s start against the Yankees on Saturday, as he’s a potential trade target for the Bombers.

Aaron Hicks hit his 16th homer — a new career-high — with two outs in the third, giving him five homers in his last five games. Hicks also drew a bases-loaded walk in the fifth.
