NYCFC rules Hudson
Maximiliano Moralez got the breakthrough goal in the 85th minute and New York City FC beat the Red Bulls, 1-0, on Sunday at Yankee Stadium.
The Red Bulls’ Aaron Long mismanaged Tyler Adams’ back pass and NYCFC’s Jonathan Lewis pounced on the loose ball. Lewis then sent over a cross that found its way through Long’s legs to Moralez, who put it into the net with a straightforward finish.
Sean Johnson had four saves to record his sixth clean sheet of the season for City (10-4-4).
The Red Bulls (10-5-2) had their three-game winning streak snapped.
LIBERTY CAN’T WING IT
Skylar Diggins-Smith had 32 points, seven rebounds and five assists to help the Dallas Wings beat the Liberty, 97-87.
The Wings (10-8) had their largest lead at 88-65 on Allisha Gray’s 3-pointer with 6:27 left in the game. Dallas still led by 20 with three minutes to go before the Liberty (5-14) closed the game on a 15-5 run.
HE’S A WIN-NA
Kevin Na rode a hot putter to halt a winless streak of nearly seven years on the PGA Tour.
Na shot a 6-under-64 for a five-stroke victory at A Military Tribute at The Greenbrier.
The 34-year-old Na’s only previous tour win came in Las Vegas in October 2011.
“I wasn’t sure if it was going to come again. I was hoping it would — sooner than later,” Na said. “I’ve been close so many times, failed so many times.”
BULL MARKET
Zach LaVine is staying with the Chicago Bulls, after the team matched a four-year, $80 million offer sheet the guard got from the Sacramento Kings.
CELTS GREAT RAMSEY DIES
Frank Ramsey, an AllAmerican at Kentucky and member of seven NBA championship teams with the Boston Celtics, died Sunday. He was 86.
Ramsey was a part of Kentucky’s 1951 national championship team and a three-time All-American. The school said he died of natural causes.
The 6-foot-3 guard was selected by the Celtics in the first round of the 1953 NBA draft and began his professional career one year later. He averaged double figures in eight of his nine seasons and 13.4 points per game for his career. His No. 23 jersey is retired by Boston.
