METS GAMEDAY

GAME 88: July 9, 2018 Where: Citi Field

- BY JOHN HEALY

Aaron Nola sure knows how to ruin the Mets’ day.

With the Mets fresh off a walk-off victory in the first game of a doubleheader, the Phillies ace silenced them with seven shutout innings and spoiled Corey Oswalt’s no-hit bid in the fifth with a three-run double — the Phillies’ only hit off Oswalt — to hand the Mets a 3-1 loss.

Oswalt appeared poised to go toe-for-toe with Nola, pitching four perfect innings and striking out six of the first 12 batters he faced in his third career start, but ran into trouble in the fifth, giving up a three-run double to Nola — which was all the run support the Phillies pitcher needed.

Nola returned to the mound to strike out the side in the bottom half of the inning and finished with 10 strikeouts over seven innings, allowing just one hit and a walk.

Wilmer Flores, who crushed the walk-off home run in the 10th inning of the first game to split the doubleheader, delivered the Mets’ only two hits in the game — a single in the first and RBI double in the ninth.

PLAY OF THE GAME

With two outs and the bases loaded, Nola delivered the Phillies’ first hit of the game off Oswalt down the rightfield line for a three-run double to put them up, 3-1.

TURNING POINT

The Mets decision to intentionally walk Maikel Franco in the fifth inning with two outs and first base open to bring up Nola backfired, as Nola drove in the only runs of the game.

STAR OF THE GAME

Nola. Not only did he deliver the clutch hit, he was also dominant on the mound, striking out 10 and lowering his ERA to 2.27 for his 12th win of the season.
