YANK GAMEDAY

- GETTY

BALTIMORE — Aaron Boone left CC Sabathia in too long — but Neil Walker didn’t do either of them any favors.

Walker’s misplay at first led to Danny Valencia’s go-ahead three-run homer off Sabathia in the sixth inning, and the Yankees suffered a bad 5-4 loss to the Orioles in Game 1 of their doubleheader on Monday afternoon at Camden Yards.

The Yankees mounted a rally in the ninth against Zach Britton but couldn’t score. Miguel Andujar led off the frame with a pinch-hit single, advanced to second on a wild pitch and reached third on Brandon Drury’s groundout. But Kyle Higashioka struck out and pinch-hitter Brett Gardner grounded out to first to end it.

Baltimore had lost six in a row and 13 of 14 going in. Sabathia went in having allowed opponents to post a .980 OPS in their third time through the order.

Sabathia allowed five runs on seven hits in five-plus innings. He gave up a two-run homer to Mark Trumbo in the fourth and the three-run homer to Valencia in the sixth, which knocked him out of the game.

Valencia had been in an 0-for-25 slump before getting a hanging slider from Sabathia and blasting it over the wall in center to give the Orioles a 5-4 lead.

Sabathia had an animated day on the mound, which included barking at homeplate umpire John Tumpane over his strike zone. Giancarlo Stanton slugged his 22nd homer leading off the second.

PLAY OF THE GAME

Sabathia fielded a comebacker from Adam Jones, threw to second and raised both arms up in the air before the 1-4-3 doubleplay was even completed in the fifth.

TURNING POINT

With a runner on first and no outs in the sixth, Jonathan Schoop hit a hot smash to first that Walker couldn’t handle, putting runners on second and third and setting up Valencia’s go-ahead threerun homer. The play was ruled a double but easily could’ve been scored an error.

STAR OF THE GAME

Schoop had three hits in four at-bats.
