3 hop on money train for 2021 mayoral run

- Erin Durkin

Potential mayoral hopefuls are already stockpiling cash for the race to replace Mayor de Blasio in 2021, records show.

Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams leads the pack with $919,339 raised over the past six months, according to financial disclosure records released by the city Campaign Finance Board on Tuesday.

The disclosures cover the first fund-raising period for the election that's still more than three years off.

City Controller Scott Stringer was not far behind, raising $824,904 between January and July. And Stringer had $1.4 million left over from his 2017 reelection race that he transferred to his new campaign, giving him the biggest total war chest, with $2.1 million on hand after his spending.

Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. brought in $558,005.

Diaz is the only candidate who has officially declared a campaign for mayor with the finance board.

Adams has made no secret of his plans to run, saying publicly shortly after de Blasio took office that he wanted to succeed him.

Stringer, who ran for mayor in 2013 before switching to the controller's race, has been less forthcoming about his intentions but is widely seen to be planning a run.

“There's no obvious next in line, and that makes people move more quickly,” said Jeanne Zaino, a professor of political science at Iona College.

De Blasio must leave office due to term limits after his current, second term, and the three hopefuls are also termlimited out of their current offices.
