Quinn adds 2 assists to Rangers staff
David Quinn rounded out his coaching staff with a colleague from his Lake Erie stint and a rival from his Boston days.
The Rangers announced on Tuesday the hirings of David Oliver and Greg Brown as assistant coaches, joining holdover Lindy Ruff.
Oliver was most recently the Colorado Avalanche’s director of player development for the past four seasons of his 11-year tenure with the organization. When Quinn was the head coach of Colorado’s AHL team Lake Erie from 2009-12, Oliver filled several roles as Lake Erie’s general manager, an assistant coach for one season and director of AHL hockey operations. Oliver was director of player development for Lake Erie while Kevin Shattenkirk was there.
The 47-year-old played parts of nine seasons in the NHL, including 14 games with the Rangers during the 1996-97 season.
Brown, 50, spent the last 14 seasons on the Boston College’s men’s hockey coaching staff, coaching current Rangers Kevin Hayes and Chris Kreider during that time. Brown was the associate head coach under Jerry York for the last six seasons. Brown and Quinn matched wits as part of the Green Line rivalry for parts of the last 14 years. During Brown’s first five years on the BC staff, Quinn was an assistant at Boston University, and Quinn was BU’s head coach the last five seasons before being named the Rangers’ head coach in May.
Quinn and Brown were teammates on Team USA’s 1986 IIHF World Junior Championship team which took bronze, the U.S.’s first ever medal in the tournament. Brown played 94 career games in the NHL with the Sabres, Penguins and Jets.
