Family values a la Trump

-

Thursday comes another court-imposed deadline the Trump administration is sure to blow right past: to reunite immigrant families torn asunder in the cruel policy of punishing bordercrossers by ripping sons and daughters from their mothers and fathers.

Federal officials Tuesday told U.S. District Court Judge Dana Sabraw that the government had given 1,012 parents their children back, out of some 2,500 who were separated, with hundreds more reunifications on target by today.

Which is likely to leave the government still responsible for having broken more than 1,000 families apart, and who knows how many permanently.

Nor could the government tell Sabraw how many parents have already been deported; it appears, said the George W. Bush-appointed judge, that “there’s a large number of parents who are unaccounted for or who may have been removed without their child, and that is a deeply troubling reality.”

Amazon packages get tracked with more care.

Meanwhile, a President who once claimed to find the policy abhorrent shows no concern about fixing the damage done. He’s too busy producing the same sick, staged reality show put on for the satisfaction of supporters baselessly convinced that the Salvadoran gang MS-13 menaces the American heartland.

The true story involves tough mothers, and fathers, of a very different sort. Some wrongly hoped that were they to agree to deportation, they would at least see their kids at long last. Others finally are enjoying their first moments with their kids again, but under pressure to give up viable claims for asylum — which used to be something America cared about hearing.

Not anymore. Now, undocumented immigrants who are living decent lives all have targets on their backs.

Tuesday night, Manhattan Federal Judge Paul Crotty, another George W. Bush appointee, freed pizza deliveryman Pablo Villavicencio after 53 days behind bars.

In his ruling, Crotty wrote that though Villavicencio stayed in the country unlawfully, “he has otherwise been a model citizen,” married to a U.S. citizen. “He now has two children, both of whom are United States citizens. He has no criminal history. He has paid his taxes. And he has worked diligently to provide for his family.”

The Trump administration couldn’t care less about justice. It only wants bodies. This is travesty and chaos posing as law and order.
