GOP group mulls action in AG race
ALBANY — The Republican Attorneys General Association is closely monitoring the AG race in New York, but hasn’t yet decided whether to get involved.
Association spokesman Zack Roday said they have met with candidate Keith Wofford and walked away impressed, particularly over his early ability to raise money. Wofford (inset), a corporate lawyer, reported raising more than $1 million in the first few weeks after getting in the race.
“He’s an accomplished lawyer,” Roday said. “He definitely has the ability to change the culture of corruption in New York and be an outside voice to check (Gov.) Cuomo and (Mayor) de Blasio. I think that’s a compelling argument to voters.”
The group also believes the New York race can be more competitive than in years past given twoterm incumbent Eric Schneiderman’s sudden resignation in May after a New Yorker magazine article alleged he physically assaulted four women.
But with attorney general races in play in other states and New York being a heavily blue state that last elected a Republican AG in 1995, the association wants to make sure it spends its resources where the GOP has the best chances to win, Roday said.
“Spending determinations are constantly ongoing,” Roday said.
Wofford will take on whoever of the four Democrats wins the Sept. 13 primary.
