Trucker rescues 64 dogs & cats from flooding
It's not the magic school bus — it's better!
As Hurricane Florence was ready to blow into into the Southeast coast, a trucker from Greenback, Tenn., rescued 53 dogs and 11 cats with his yellow school bus.
Animal lover Tony Alsup, 51, drove to South Carolina last Monday to save “the leftovers” from crowded animal shelters, according to the Greenvale News.
In an effort to help the animals, Alsup drove to four shelters in South Carolina. “We take on the ones that deserve a chance even though they are big and a little ugly. But I love big dogs, and we find places for them,” said Alsup, referring to the animals that aren't easily adopted.
Photos posted to social media show the yellow school bus filled with dogs in large crates.
The towns he visited were North Myrtle Beach, Dillon, Georgetown and Orangeburg.
“It's all true — Tony swooped in at 4am Wednesday morning to pick up our “leftovers” — the dogs with blocky heads, the ones with heartworm. The ones no one else will ever take. And he got them to safety. Not the most conventional evacuation, but surely the one with the most heart,” Saint Frances Animal Center, the only open-admission animal shelter in S.C., wrote in a Facebook post.
Ultimately, Alsup will bring the rescued animals to a shelter in Alabama, where they will be sent to shelters country-wide. There, the pooches await adoption.
“We are looking for FOSTERS all Across America please PM me if you can help and someone WILL get back you.” Alsup posted to Facebook Friday.
Alsup (photo), who named his organization Tony's Emergency Animal Rescue and Shelter, has been using his school bus since Hurricanes Harvey and Irma — and will continue to help people and pets in Lumberton, N.C., along with other NGOs.
