‘Take me home’

Pit bull abandoned in B’klyn park with note

A routine walk in the park led to a saving an abandoned dog’s life.

Eric Maus, a screenwriter and part-time dog walker was strolling through Prospect Park with his furry charges when he spotted a pit bull tied to a tree near the boathouse around 4:30 p.m. Monday.

“I actually took a longer walk than normal that day — and if I hadn’t done that I wouldn’t have seen her,” Maus told the Daily News.

Exhausted from his 10 mile walk, Maus, 28, couldn’t help but stop when he saw the pooch’s big brown eyes.

The dog — who he is calling Mamas because it was written on the note — wasn’t crying.

“She was just lying there with her tongue out. She was adorable,” he said.

But knew something was wrong when he noticed a note pinned to the tree next to her.

“I’m a great dog,” the handwritten note read on a Catholic Charities notepad. “Don’t let my size scare you. I’m sweet.”

He posted a photo of Mamas to the Prospect Lefferts Gardens and Brooklyn Neighbors’ Facebook page writing, “There’s a note on the tree that says take him. Who do we call?”

Minutes later, Lost and Found Pets in Brooklyn’s editor Elisa Flash hooked Maus up with the Sean Casey Animal Rescue in Windsor Terrace.

“Even though he had a full shelter, he was able to take her in,” Flash said.

Once Maus was directed on what to do next, he rushed the dog to the animal rescue.

A kind stranger even helped drive Mamas to the facility, while Maus followed on his bike.

“It was definitely a community effort,” Maus said about the rescue.

Flash believes the person who left the pooch really did love her but just couldn’t take care of her.

“As of now the dog appears to have a urinary tract infection, otherwise she’s in pretty good health,” Flash explained.

“She has a wonderful temperament so it should be very easy to find her to find a nice suitable home.”

Maus, a Milwaukee native who moved to the Big Apple about a year and a half ago, recalled that his childhood pet was a dog adopted from a pound.

He “would’ve loved to adopt” her but, unfortunately, his living situation doesn’t allow for it.

“It’s moments like these where I want to raise awareness about adopting rather than buying your next dog or cat. Adopted pets are the most loving pets there are,” Maus said.
