Cuomo accepts Working Families nom despite slap

- Kenneth Lovett

ALBANY — They may not like each other, but they’re now tied together.

Gov. Cuomo late Friday afternoon accepted the nomination from the progressive Working Families Party that had ripped him as a corporate Democrat who enabled state Senate Republicans and originally backed his Democratic primary foe, Cynthia Nixon.

In accepting the line by the party’s imposed 5 p.m. Friday deadline, Cuomo said the need for Democrats and their allies to unify is most important in the era of President Trump.

“The governor’s priority is a unified Democratic Party focused on taking back the House and the state Senate,” Cuomo campaign spokeswoman Dani Lever said. “This election is the most important one in our lifetime given Donald Trump’s policies and his imminent takeover of the Supreme Court.”

WFP state director Bill Lipton agreed.

“Despite our differences in the primary, the Working Families Party and Gov. Cuomo agree that the top priority is to end Republican control in the New York state Senate and in Congress. Nothing could be more important,” Lipton said.

Despite the frosty relationship between the two, it will be the third time Cuomo will run on the Working Families Party line for governor.

Also accepting the party’s nomination is Lt. Gov. Kathy Hochul, who will replace City Councilman Jumaane Williams on the line.
