Book has the NYPD covered

Picture this: The NYPD Friday debuted a coffee table photo book about itself.

More than 100 pictures are featured in "NYPD: Behind the scenes with the men and women of the New York City Police Department," by photographer Mark Condren.

Brief descriptions accompany each photo. The book's cover shows two officers, one female, one male, responding to a job in the dead of night in East New York, Brooklyn.

Other photos, such as warrant cops peering under an apartment door, show officers taking police action, but many others depict them interacting with everyday New Yorkers, from two kids sitting on a parked car to two guys working behind a pizzeria counter.

“I think what I like most about these photos is that it captures such a wide array of the many, many functions of the NYPD,” Police Commissioner James O'Neill said.

"So much of it might seem routine to us in that moment, because in that instance it's sometimes difficult to recognize the gravity of a singular situation,” he continued.

“It made me realize what a positive, lasting effect a simple interaction with a young person might have,” O'Neill added.

Some of the proceeds from the book — the cover price is $49.99 — will go to the Police Foundation, the nonprofit group that funds various NYPD initiatives, such as buying bullet-resistant vests and paying some of the costs for officers stationed overseas as part of the department's counterterrorism program. The book is for sale on the Police Foundation's website.
