Bid to ax public advocate office
Legislation that would eliminate the city public advocate’s office is expected to be introduced in the City Council this week.
The bill, which was first reported by Politico, would eliminate the post held by current Public Advocate Letitia James and would throw what promises to be a crowded field of candidates into disarray once she leaves the job to become state attorney general in January.
The Council bill is being sponsored by freshman Democratic City Councilman Kalman Yeger. Co-sponsors include Councilmen Ritchie Torres, Mark Gjonaj and Ruben Diaz Sr.
James slammed the bill in a statement Monday. “Our most vulnerable communities will be the real losers if political games get in the way of real work,” said a James spokeswoman.
The job has served as a stepping-stone for higher office for the last two people who’ve served — the public advocate before James was Mayor de Blasio.
