‘Prophet’ ranted in bias bash

- BY ESHA RAY AND THOMAS TRACY

The mentally-ill Muslim cabbie accused of striking a Jewish man in Brooklyn last month identified himself as the “prophet Jesus” when he was taken into custody, court papers released Thursday show.

“Sister f---er!” Farrukh Afzal screamed to his victim Lipa Schwartz after attacking the 62-year-old Orthodox man in Borough Park on Oct. 14.

His statements to Schwartz and the police were released Thursday as Afzal was indicted on hate crime charges.

The 37-year-old cabbie attacked Schwartz at the intersection of 13th Ave. and Sixth St. in Borough Park during the 7:20 a.m. clash, according to police. He is also accused of following and threatening two others who witnessed the attack.

Prosecutors charged Afzal with assault, criminal mischief and menacing as a hate crime, meaning that if he is found guilty, the sentencing recommendation will be more severe.

Afzal told police he attacked Schwartz, only after the older man held up traffic and “remained in front of my car, yelling and flailing his arms.”

“(Schwartz) walked up to the passenger side of the car and punched the window multiple times,” Afzal said, according to court papers. “I told him to stop punching the car. He then walked away.

“I then pulled over, got out, and gave him a slap,” Afzal said.

Witnesses said Afzal screamed anti-Semitic slurs at Schwartz during the assault.

Afzal's attorney said the cabbie is mentally ill and needs help — not incarceration.

“He has a documented history of mental illness, based on my interactions with him (and) my social worker's interaction with him,” attorney Marva Brown said.

Relatives said Afzal, who worked for the Church Ave. Car Service — but has since been fired — had been diagnosed with schizophrenia a decade ago.

He is currently being held without bail, officials said. His next court date is Jan. 14.
