Comey and Lynch are subpoenaed

- Daily News Staff

Former FBI Director James Comey and former Attorney General Loretta Lynch have been summoned by the House Judiciary Committee to testify next month at closed-door hearings about their decisionmaking around the 2016 presidential election, according to a Thursday report.

The subpoenas were issued Wednesday but revealed publicly on Thanksgiving, Politico said.

House Republicans are probing allegations of antiTrump bias among officials within the FBI and Department of Justice in 2016 and 2017, and Comey and Lynch have been ordered to testify Dec. 3 and Dec. 4.

Comey (photo), who was FBI director during the 2016 presidential election, has previously been invited to give testimony privately. But he asked to give public testimony instead.

On Thursday, he tweeted about getting the subpoena along with his holiday meal.

“Happy Thanksgiving. Got a subpoena from House Republicans,” he wrote. “I’m still happy to sit in the light and answer all questions. But I will resist a ‘closed door’ thing because I’ve seen enough of their selective leaking and distortion. Let’s have a hearing and invite everyone to see.”

Comey, who was fired by President Trump in May 2017, was criticized by many during the election for announcing the FBI was not recommending charges against Democrat Hillary Clinton for using a private email server when she was secretary of state. Just days before the general election in November, he reversed course and reopened the probe.

His lawyer told Politico that Comey is willing to speak but only if the hearing is open to all — which Democrats have also demanded.

Loretta Lynch drew Republican ire when it was revealed that former President Bill Clinton had spoken to the then-attorney general at an Arizona airport in 2016 when the probe into his wife was in full swing.

She did not comment Thursday about her subpoena.
