An 18-year-old gunman was shot and killed by police and two other people were left injured after a violent fight at Alabama’s largest mall on Thanksgiving night.

Thousands of bargainhunters eager to get a jump on Black Friday sales were inside Riverchase Galleria in the Birmingham suburb of Hoover during the melee.

The incident unfolded around 10 p.m. at the Riverchase Galleria in the Birmingham suburb of Hoover. Police said it started with an altercation between an 18year-old and the 21-year-old gunman, which quickly escalated into violence.

It’s unclear what exactly started the confrontation, but authorities “do not believe at this point the 18year-old was armed,” Hoover Police Capt. Gregg Rector told CNN.

The shooter opened firing, striking the teen twice in the torso, and then attempted to flee.

“One of our officers did engage that individual and shot him. He was dead on the scene,” Rector said.
