Probe school travel boondoggle, pols say
State lawmakers are asking for special meetings to get to the bottom of wasteful spending in the city Education Department after a bombshell audit by city Controller Scott Stringer revealed up to $20 million in improper travel spending by school officials.
State Assembly members Nicole Malliotakis (R-Brooklyn/Staten Island) and Michael Reilly (R-Brooklyn/Staten Island) co-authored a letter Thursday that calls on Assembly Education Committee Chair Catherine Nolan (DQueens) to hold hearings on the wasteful school spending starting in January.
Stringer’s tally of expense vouchers suggested the public school system botched more than $20 million in travel expenses for 2017, including unnecessary meetings in lavish hotels that could have been held for free or much less on school sites.
Mayor de Blasio has promised to take action on the audit but Malliotakis and Reilly want state lawmakers to conduct their own probe to get to the bottom of the matter.
“As legislators and community members we find the recent revelations about the manner in which funds have been spent ... utterly disappointing,” the two wrote to Nolan.
