Cops, DOT to review S.I. Ferry security

- BY JOHN ANNESE

Police and transportation officials will conduct a top-to-bottom review of Staten Island Ferry security after video showed cops and private security guards failing to clear the St. George terminal when a bomb-sniffing dog detected a suspicious bag.

The video, first reported on by the Staten Island Advance, shows the dog, which belongs to a private security firm, sitting down twice after sniffing a man's bag during the morning commute Oct. 5.

For several minutes before cops roped off the area, they left the bag unattended while commuters walked past what might have been a bomb.

The NYPD announced Thursday it would join the city Transportation Department to perform a “comprehensive security review” of the ferry.

“This review will include protocols, deployments and procedures aboard vessels in the ferry fleet, as well as at the terminals on both the Staten Island sides,” the NYPD said.

Though the statement makes no reference to the video, police sources said the Oct. 5 screw-up sparked the review.

“There's never a situation where security personnel should ignore an unattended package,” Mayor de Blasio said on Wednesday. He said the video was “on the agenda” of a meeting this week with NYPD Commissioneer James O'Neill.
