Sword vic dies wks. after gash

A 44-year-old Bronx MTA administrator died weeks after her deranged boyfriend hacked her foot with a sword — and now he may face homicide charges, cops said Monday.

Cops were called to Dayanara Carela’s second-floor apartment on W. 238th St. near Orloff Ave. in Kingsbridge about 9 p.m. Nov. 3 on a report that she had been assaulted.

Her live-in boyfriend, Gilbert Nunez, attacked her with the sword in a jealous rage, said police. Medics took Carela to St. Barnabas Hospital in stable condition with severe gash to her left foot. She was treated there for an unknown period of time and released.

Two days after the attack — on Nov. 5 — Nunez, 43, was arrested on felony assault charges.

Incredibly, Carela went back to Nunez. She refused to cooperate with prosecutors, so her boyfriend was released from jail on his own recognizance on Nov. 9.

Nine days later, on Nov. 18, Nunez called 911 to report that Carela was in medical distress.

Medics took her to Montefiore Medical Center, and she died later that day.

The city medical examiner concluded she died from blood clots that formed as a result of the sword attack — technically, “a bilateral pulmonary embolism due to deep vein thrombosis due to lower extremity complicating chop wound of left foot.”

Thus her death was ruled a homicide.

Nunez may face upgraded charges. He’s due back in court Dec. 17.

The NYPD did not publicly disclose the existence of the case until Monday.

“I am deeply saddened to learn of Ms. Carela’s passing,” NYC Transit President Andy Byford said. “She devoted nearly two decades of loyal service to New York City Transit and our thoughts and prayers are with her family during this difficult time.”

Carela had been employed with the transit system since July 1999, most recently as an administrative project manager.

Nunez has a number of prior arrests, most of which are sealed. He was arrested in February for assaulting Carela and for an unrelated assault in August 2009.
