Pols rip cops over busts for THC vape pens
What are the cops smoking?
A pair of city councilmen are asking that question after reports that police are still making arrests for THC oil — a marijuana derivative found in vape pens — despite a department directive against low-level pot busts.
Queens City Councilmen Donovan Richards and Rory Lancman, who’s running for Queens district sttorney, penned a letter to Police Commissioner James O’Neill looking for answers as to why the arrests continue.
“If anything, this [form] of use seems like a safer and less intrusive way of consuming marijuana than traditional smoking, which is explicitly covered by the city’s new marijuana enforcement policies” the pair said in a letter.
NYPD spokesman Sgt. Brendan Ryan said the department will review the letter.
“On September 1st of this year the Department initiated a new marijuana enforcement policy, because the NYPD recognizes it is not productive to arrest people for smoking marijuana who have no prior criminal history,” Ryan said in an email.
Public defenders from the Legal Aid Society and Brooklyn Defenders Services said arrests continue citywide.
