Hack attack hits Repubs’ elex effort
Officials with the House GOP campaign arm were targeted in a major cyberattack that allowed an intruder to spy on their email for months.
The National Republican Congressional Committee said Tuesday it had been hit by a “cyber intrusion” during the 2018 midterm campaign. The hack was reported to the FBI.
A committee spokesman said the attack was carried out by an “unknown entity,” and an internal probe has been launched.
Sources told Politico, which reported the breach, the intrusion was detected in April by an committee vendor, who alerted the committee and its cybersecurity contractor.
Senior House Republicans, including Speaker Paul Ryan (RWis.) and Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.) were unaware of the intrusion until contacted by Politico Monday, the site reported.
The FBI did not respond to a request for comment.
During the 2016 presidential election, Russian hackers stole and leaked more than 150,000 emails stolen from the Democratic National Committee.
