Sources: Mets reach out for J.T.

- — Ackert

The Mets are not resting after their first big deal of the Brodie Van Wagenen era.

After introducing Robinson Cano and Edwin Diaz on Tuesday, the Mets were quick to talk about the work ahead. Atop their wish list heading into next week’s Winter Meetings is an upgrade at catcher. Industry sources confirmed reports that the Mets also reached out to the Marlins Tuesday about All-Star catcher J.T. Realmuto.

The catcher, who is represented by Van Wagenen’s former partner at CAA, has made it clear he wants to be traded from the rebuilding Marlins. The Fish, who have traded away most of their assets under the new ownership that includes former Yankee captain Derek Jeter, have made it clear they would want a king’s ransom of prospects and players in return.

A team source said the Mets found the Marlins’ asking price “high,” but said they would continue to be “aggressive” in trying to improve at catcher.
