Would-be burglar’s death in Qns. ruled a homicide

- BY THOMAS TRACY

The death of a would-be burglar who was beaten by two brothers following an attempted break-in at their Queens home has been declared a homicide, the city medical examiner’s office ruled Wednesday.

Cops have not charged anyone in the death of Shamel Shavuo, who was killed after he tried to break into a home in Jamaica, Queens, on July 30.

Brothers Joel Paul, 27, and Michael Paul, 16, told detectives Shavuo knocked on the door and then tried to force his way into their home.

The brothers confronted him outside and attacked him with a baseball bat, cops said.

Michael Paul told detectives he heard a knock on the door. He thought it was a pizza he ordered, but Shavuo was the only one there.

Shavuo got a foot in, but the teen forced him outside and locked the door.

The Paul brothers’ mother, Melinda Pitter, 57, was home and called on Joel Paul to help. The brothers confronted Shavuo outside, said sources.

Shavuo died after he was repeatedly struck with the bat and stabbed, officials said.

For some reason, Shavuo claimed he had lived at the Queens address the brothers were apparently defending.

The brothers were released without charges after Shavuo’s death, but a Queens district attorney’s inquiry was continuing.

An email to the city medical examiner was not returned.
