FBI agent shot in Brooklyn
An on-duty FBI agent was shot in the shoulder during a gunfight with two people in Brooklyn on Saturday, authorities said.
The agent was shot near E. 92nd St. and Ave. N, in a residential part of Canarsie, at about 3:30 p.m., cops said.
He was sitting in a car conducting surveillance when the gunmen drove by and opened fire, one source with knowledge of the case said.
The suspects raced away from the scene in separate cars as the agent returned fire, sources with knowledge of the case said.
One suspect was nabbed a short distance away on Remsen Ave.
That suspect drove a car — which was riddled with bullet holes and had several shell casings inside — into an auto body shop in an attempt to hide it before NYPD cops in body armor and K-9 dogs flooded the area.
“This was a crazy caper,” one cop was overheard saying as they began to process the scene.
A worker at a nearby gas station couldn’t believe the suspect opted to get his car repaired rather than flee the borough.
“So dumb,” said the gas jockey, who identified himself as Omar. “He’s worried about fixing the car? You know, ‘I’ll shoot him, I’ll go to the hospital and then by that time, my car will be done (so) I’ll pick it up and go home.’”
The second suspect fled the scene in a BMW that had at least one window shot. Cops busted him at Kingsbrook Hospital after he showed up there with a gunshot wound.
“There are no outstanding suspects at this time,” NYPD Chief of Department Terence Monahan tweeted at 7:13 p.m. “Wishing the agent a speedy recovery.”
Initial reports indicated there were three suspects in the shooting. But as the investigation unfolded, authorities determined only two people were involved. No charges have been filed. Medics took the agent to Kings County Hospital, where he is expected to survive. A second person believed to have been in the car with the agent was also taken to Brookdale University Medical Center with an unknown injury.
Scores of cops responded to the scene, but an NYPD spokeswoman said the FBI was investigating the shooting.
“Earlier today, one of our agents was wounded by gunfire in Brooklyn and transported to a local hospital,” the FBI said on Twitter Saturday afternoon. “No further details are available at this time.”
A call to the FBI for comment was not immediately returned.
