Transparency in NYC hiring, firing
Manhattan: New Yorkers deserve a city government that is transparent and accountable (“Should have axed Esposito myself,” Dec. 4). This extends to personnel decisions at the highest levels of city government. When individuals in charge of providing essential city services are let go, it’s important that we understand why.
I have known Commissioner Joe Esposito for decades and hold him in the highest possible regard. He is a model civil servant, and because of his dedication and strategic competence New York is a safer place. I have no doubt that Esposito will land on his feet — hopefully in a role that allows him to continue serving our city. However, the process that led to his dismissal was poorly managed by City Hall and has been unfair to all New Yorkers.
