Ole cow! ‘Fearless Girl’ leaves ‘Bull’ behind
“Fearless Girl” won’t be taking any more bull.
The bronze statue of a young girl facing off against the iconic “Charging Bull” statue in downtown Manhattan found a new home Monday in front of the New York Stock Exchange.
The statue, which depicts a girl with her hands on her hips and her chest defiantly thrust forward, was first installed in Bowling Green Park in March 2017.
It immediately became an icon in its own right, attracting droves of onlookers — including Mayor de Blasio — who were drawn by its message of female empowerment.
But State Street Global Advisers, the financial services firm that commissioned the statue to promote women in leadership, also took heat for it, with some criticizing it as self-serving. The firm agreed to pay a $5 million settlement over accusations it underpaid female and black staff just months after the statue was unveiled.
A de Blasio spokeswoman cited “broad safety concerns” stemming from the size of the pedestrian island and proximity to traffic as reasons for the move.
