Port Authority cop helps saves family in N.J. fire
That’s mighty neighborly of him.
An off-duty Port Authority cop helped save a family from a raging fire that destroyed 12 homes Saturday night in North Brunswick, N.J., sources said.
Officer John Shaughnessy was walking out of his townhouse about 10:30 pm when he saw flames jumping out of a first-floor window about 50 yards away.
Shaughnessy, a five-year Port Authority veteran, ran across the parking lot and joined cops already at the scene, banging on windows and walls of first-floor apartments to alert the inhabitants.
After some searching, they discovered a family of four trapped on the second-story balcony. One officer then climbed to them and lowered them down to Shaughnessy and the other officers.
“The whole building went up so quick they couldn’t get out any other way,” said neighbor Katie Lynch, 38.
