‘Avenue Q’ to close in April

- Rachel DeSantis

After 15 years of teaching audiences the definition of “schadenfreude” and drawing laughs with songs like “The Internet Is for Porn,” “Avenue Q” will have its final curtain call April 28.

“As the song says, ‘Everything in life is only for now,' ” the show's official Twitter account wrote Tuesday. “We want to thank every single one of you for your support and for calling ‘Avenue Q' your home for 15 years!”

The at times obscene but always funny musical starring politically incorrect felt puppets debuted on Broadway in 2003 at the John Golden Theatre and became a surprise hit, winning the Tony Award for Best Musical a year later.

It was slated to close in 2009, but instead moved Off-Broadway, where it's been showing ever since at the New World Stages.
