Bomb threats not credible, NYPD says
Hundreds of bomb threats were reported in New York City and across the U.S. on Thursday, authorities said.
The NYPD released a statement on social media saying it was monitoring “multiple threats” via email to locations in the city demanding $20,000 in Bitcoin to not detonate the bombs, but did not consider the threats to be credible.
“These threats are also being reported to other locations nationwide & are NOT considered credible at this time,” the NYPD Counterterrorism Bureau posted on Twitter.
Some 30 to 40 messages were sent to city entities. “The email has different spoofed addresses, and the narratives have slight variations,” a police official said.
The FBI Washington field office tweeted it is conducting a nationwide investigation of the threats. “We encourage the public to remain vigilant and to promptly report suspicious activities,” it said.
