- Molly Crane-Newman

New Yorkers looked across the pond for inspiration when it came to naming their babies last year — with the Irish name Liam retaining the No. 1 spot for baby boys in the Big Apple and the English name Emma surpassing all the other girls.

Rising from third place, Emma claimed the top spot from Olivia, which had enjoyed two consecutive years as the No. 1 name chosen for baby girls in New York City, according to figures released by the Health Department on Friday.

Liam retained the title for most popular boys' name in 2016, with Noah moving from fourth to second place.

There were 734 baby boys named Liam in 2017 and 571 baby girls named Emma, the stats show.
