Machado to pick in new year

- BY ERIC BARROW

Will it be a happy New Year in the Bronx?

Manny Machado, the superstar free agent, has let it be known he won’t make a decision on where he will sign until after Jan. 1, according to Fancred Sports’ Jon Heyman.

So maybe it won’t be a Christmas gift for the Yankees, but a new year and a new shortstop instead.

The Yankees, Phillies and White Sox all met with Machado this week, with one of the three expected to land the slugging infielder, who spent most of his career in the AL East with the Orioles before landing with the Dodgers for the latter part of last season.

Machado visited Yankee Stadium for about 90 minutes on Wednesday, going in and out sight unseen save for some flashes of him in the window of a black SUV. He later was wined and dined by Yankees brass before making the trip down I-95 to Philadelphia for a Thursday meet and greet with the Phillies.

He spent over four hours at Citizens’ Bank Park and called it a “pretty awesome” visit. The Phillies have made it known that they are out to spend silly amounts of money in free agency, which is essentially what it would take to woo Machado, who is hoping for a 10-year deal worth upwards of $300 million. Machado’s agent, Dan Lozano, was the agent for Carlos Beltran when he was a player. Beltran recently signed on as a special adviser to the Yankees, ratcheting up speculation that he could help draw Machado to the Bronx.

The White Sox appear to be the sleeper pick of the three teams, although they did recently sign Yonder Alonso, who is Machado’s brother-in-law. So which team will it be? You’ll have to wait at least until the ball drops to find out.
