We’re cool with snow storm: city

Don’t fear the flakes!

Snow is coming to the Big Apple, but this time city agencies are ready to prove they’re worth their salt.

The five boroughs are expected to get hit by a pair of winter storms in coming days, bringing with them what may be the largest accumulation of snow since a 6-inch dumping crippled the city Nov. 15.

If the forecast holds up, the incoming storms will be the biggest weather challenge for the city’s Office of Emergency Management since its goof last fall led to a commuter hell and the eventual firing of the agency’s commissioner, Joseph Esposito.

But that snafu served as a lesson, says Deputy Commissioner Jacob Cooper. “We are talking to the National Weather Service earlier and more often,” he says.

A light dusting is in the city’s forecast for late Thursday night continuing into Friday morning, says Tim Morrin of the National Weather Service. It could bring upward of an inch of snow.

Another storm is expected to follow Saturday night, but it will likely bring a wintry mix of rain and slush instead of fresh powder, Morrin says. “One to 2 inches of rainfall is not out of the question on Saturday night into Sunday,” he said, noting flooding is likely throughout the city.

On Nov. 15, an icy mix on unsalted roads paralyzed the city, leading to gridlock.

Cooper said his agency is now more proactive in communicating updates.

Early projections for November’s blizzard indicated it would bring an inch of snow. When the forecast changed, the city was caught flat-footed.
